A formal sitting of the Court of Justice of the European Communities was held at 5.00 p.m. today in memory of Judge G. Federico Mancini, who died in Bologna on 21 July 1999 following illness.
Federico Mancini served as an Advocate General at the Court of Justice from 7 October 1982 to 6 October 1988. He was appointed a Judge of the Court on 7 October 1988 and held office until his death.
In his work as a Member of the Court and through his publications, Federico Mancini had a significant influence on the development of Community law. In 1998 the Italian and European university fraternity presented to him, as a token of their gratitude, a Liber amicorum containing numerous distinguished contributions from eminent professors and specialists in the fields of social law and Community law.
