The delegation comprising Justices Sandra Day O'Connor, Anthony M. Kennedy, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen G. Breyer accompagnied by other distinguished members of the United States' judiciary and senior State Department officials will visit the Court of Justice on 6 and 7 July. They will be welcomed on Monday morning by the President of the Court of Justice, Gil Carlos Rodríguez Iglesias, who will introduce the Members of the delegation to the Members of the Court of Justice. Discussions will be held between the members of the two courts on matters of mutual interest including a comparison of the respective Court procedures and their internal working methods.
After lunching with the Members of the Court of Justice and the Court of First Instance, the Supreme Court delegation will participate in further discussions during which the division of responsibilities respectively between Federal and State authorities in the United States and between the European Communities and the Member States will be compared. This will include a comparison between the Federal Law doctrine of preemption and the concept of subsidiarity contained in the Maastricht Treaty.
On Tuesday morning the Supreme Court delegation will attend a hearing of the Court sitting in plenary session in a case involving the interpretation of the European Community rules on free competition.
