Same-sex marriage in the EU: can a Member State refuse to recognise it?
Within the European Union, each Member State remains free to decide whether or not to authorise same-sex marriage. However, crossing a border must not deprive citizens of the rights associated with a marriage that has been legally performed elsewhere. This is one of the rights guaranteed under the principle of free movement.
