The Library

The Court of Justice of the European Union is home to the most extensive EU law library in Europe. It is meticulously curated to support the work of the Court and to provide users with authoritative and up-to-date information on all aspects of EU law.

The collection

The Library currently holds more than 290 000 books and subscribes to about 1 000 periodicals. Its collection also holds a large number of official journals, parliamentary acts and other official periodicals.

The Library’s collection covers the following subject areas:

Law

  • EU law
  • international law
  • comparative law
  • national laws
  • general theory of law

Other areas

  • economics
  • politics
  • social and administrative sciences
  • library science

The Library also houses an extensive collection of monolingual and multilingual dictionaries.

The catalogue

The library catalogue is one of the most complete and comprehensive resources on EU law in the world. Currently, the catalogue has about 360 000 bibliographical entries, with more than 80 000 entries concerning EU law. It is growing at a rate of over 20 000 entries per year.

As far as possible, the Court’s Library acquires all legal publications concerning EU law, in all the official EU languages. All the Library’s new acquisitions are examined in order to identify

  • articles on EU law and other areas of interest for the Court’s work
  • notes on judgments of the Court of Justice and the General Court

The articles and notes selected are then indexed and catalogued.

The Library’s catalogue is computerised though the platform Curius. You can use the catalogue to carry out on-line bibliographical research on EU law and the other subject areas covered by the Library. It can be accessed both in the Library’s reading room and online.

Visiting the Library

The Library is accessible to staff of the EU Institutions, legal professionals, university teachers and postgraduate students. For more information, please see our page on visiting the Library.
