Environmental Policy

The Court of Justice of the European Union is committed to protecting the environment.

It is an active participant in the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, known as EMAS. This voluntary scheme was established by an EU Regulation to help organisations evaluate and improve their environmental performance.

EMAS and the Court

On 15 December 2016, Luxembourg’s Minister for the Environment confirmed the Court’s EMAS registration. This marked a significant step in the Court’s environmental journey. It helps the Court improve its environmental performance and shows its alignment with broader EU goals for sustainability.

Key documents relating to the Court’s efforts as part of EMAS can be accessed below. They are available in French.

  1. Environmental Policy: This document outlines the Court’ overall environmental principles and goals. It serves as the Court’s strategic guide for eco-friendly operations.
  1. Environmental Statement: This document highlights the Court’s activities and their environmental impact, as well as the Court’s commitments and efforts in enhancing its environmental performance. It is updated every year.
  1. Carbon Footprint Report: This document provides a diagnostic report of the Court’s greenhouse gas emissions. It was issued for the first time in 2010 and has been updated regularly since then.

Luxembourg’s Energy Passport

Luxembourg applies strict rules on the energy performance of buildings, in order to help reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in the building sector.

Under these rules, the Court has acquired an energy performance certificate, known as an “energy passport”. This is established by an independent expert and serves as a quality label for the energy performance of buildings.
