Proofreaders/language editors are specialised assistants who conduct typographical correction and linguistic verification of translated documents in order to make the final changes and to guarantee a high level of linguistic and typographical quality.

The job of a lawyer-linguist is a profession with two aspects: legal and linguistic. Accordingly, to perform this demanding and fascinating role as an expert in legal translation, it is necessary to have both a law degree and in-depth knowledge of several foreign languages and the corresponding legal systems. Lawyer-linguists generally translate into their native language or, in rare cases, into the language of their legal studies, which they master perfectly.

Terminologists in the Projects and Terminological Coordination Unit are primarily responsible for managing multilingual legal terminology. Along with the unit’s documentalists, they also provide documentary support for the benefit of all of the institution’s staff, not only to the legal translation and interpretation services, which make extensive use of their services, but also to the drafters of case-law.

The interpreter orally translates, in real time, from a foreign language into his or her working language, the oral arguments of the parties and the questions of the judges and Advocates General during hearings of the Court and the General Court, as well as speeches and exchanges during other meetings, such as formal visits, the Meeting of judges of the Member States and formal sittings. The interpreter must have an excellent command of his or her working languages, active listening skills and be highly responsive in order to faithfully convey the meaning and intention of the original speech.

The Court recruits interpreters with the highest standards of competence and integrity, who possess a postgraduate university degree and have passed an accreditation test or a demanding competition.

Each legal translation language unit has a secretariat made up of a management assistants and several other assistants.

To support the staff of the translation and interpretation services in their work, the DGM can call on the support of a range of specific professions in the transversal teams and units.
