Biography and career

Born in 1954 in Luxembourg (Grand Duchy of Luxembourg), Mr Marc Jaeger obtained a master’s degree in law from the université Robert Schuman (Robert Schuman University) in Strasbourg (France) in 1979 and continued his studies at the College of Europe in Bruges (Belgium), where he obtained a Master of Laws in European Law in 1980.

Admitted to the Luxembourg Bar in 1981, Mr Jaeger practised as a lawyer until 1983. He then became an attaché de justice delegated to the office of the Public Attorney of Luxembourg and held that position for one year before being appointed as a judge at the Tribunal d'arrondissement de Luxembourg (Luxembourg District Court) from 1984 to 1986.

He began his career at the Court of Justice as a Legal Secretary to Advocate General Jean Mischo, with whom he worked from 1986 to 1988, before joining the cabinet of Judge G. Federico Mancini from 1988 to 1996.

In addition to his judicial duties, Mr Jaeger has been teaching as a lecturer at the University of Luxembourg since 2003 as well as, since 2015, at the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli (Free International University of Social Studies ‘Guido Carli’, Italy). From 2001 to 2018, he was President of the Institut Universitaire International Luxembourg (Luxembourg International University Institute, IUIL) and, from 2011 to 2016, President of the Board of Governors at the University of Luxembourg.

Mr Jaeger was appointed as a Judge at the General Court on 11 July 1996, where he served as President of Chamber from 10 September 2004 to 31 August 2007. Elected by his peers as President of the General Court, he held that office for four successive terms from 17 September 2007 to 26 September 2019.
