Biography and career
Born in 1979 in Antwerp (Belgium), Mr Geert De Baere graduated in law from the Universiteit Antwerpen (University of Antwerp, Belgium) in 2002 and obtained a Master of Laws at King’s College of the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom) in 2003. He completed his studies with a doctorate in law at King’s College of the University of Cambridge, where he defended his thesis in 2007. As part of his doctorate, he was Visiting Research Fellow at the Columbia Law School of Columbia University (United States) in 2005.
After completing his doctorate, he joined the Universiteit Antwerpen as Postdoctoral Research Associate, a university to which he was affiliated from 2007 to 2009.
In 2009, he joined the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL, Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium) to teach EU and international law, which he then taught as lecturer from 2010 to 2014 and as Associate Professor since 2015.
Between 2007 and 2009, Mr De Baere served as a Legal Secretary at the Court of Justice for Advocate General Eleanor Sharpston, then, from 2016 to 2017, for Judge Alexandra (Sacha) Prechal.
He was appointed as a Judge at the General Court on 4 October 2017 and served as President of Chamber from 8 October 2021 to 19 September 2022. He was re-elected by his peers as President of Chamber at the General Court on 16 September 2025 and has served in that capacity since then.
