Visit of the Supreme Court of Denmark

On 18 and 19 May 2026, a delegation from the Supreme Court of Denmark, led by its President, Jens Peter Christensen, visited the Court of Justice of the European Union. They were welcomed by Koen Lenaerts, President of the Court of Justice, together with the institution’s Members from Denmark: Niels Fenger, Judge at the Court of Justice, and Jesper Svenningsen and Louise Spangsberg Grønfeldt, Judges at the General Court.

The visit took place as part of the close and longstanding relations that the Court maintains with national courts of the Member States and offered an opportunity to further strengthen judicial dialogue.

The morning of Monday 18 May was dedicated to a number of working sessions covering

  • cooperation through the preliminary ruling procedure
  • the role of the Advocate General
  • differences in working methods between the Court of Justice and the Danish courts

In the afternoon, the participants took part in a series of roundtable discussions, focusing on

  • case types “from market court to constitutional court”
  • case-law on judicial independence and court organisation, as well as the importance of EU values
  • artificial intelligence and the courts
  • the interplay between EU law and the European Convention on Human Rights

These sessions provided an opportunity for participants to engage in discussions, exchange views and share their respective experiences on matters of common interest.

On Tuesday 19 May, the members of the delegation attended the hearing of the Grand Chamber of the Court of Justice in Case C-407/25 Tersten. The visit concluded with a presentation on the General Court.
