Hearing: Case C-12/25 Bisdom Gent
On Tuesday 30 June 2026, the Court of Justice will hear Case C-12/25 Bisdom Gent.
This case concerns a person who was baptised and later requested that all references to him be removed from the Roman Catholic Church’s register or archives. Instead of deleting his personal data, the diocese added a note in the baptismal register stating he had left the Church.
A Belgian court has asked the Court of Justice whether, under the GDPR, there is a right to data erasure in the baptismal register and whether a note in the margin could satisfy this right.
This hearing will be available in the Curia Web TV section of our website after it has been completed.
In the video below, a press officer of the Court gives an overview of the facts of the case and the legal issues involved.
