• An 1 Bealtaine 2004, chuaigh 10 mBallstát nua isteach san Aontas Eorpach: Poblacht na Seice, an Eastóin, an Chipir, an Laitvia, an Liotuáin, an Ungáir, Málta, an Pholainn, an tSlóvaic agus an tSlóivéin. Ba é sin an méadú aonair ba mhó ó thaobh pobal agus tíortha araon. Ina theannta sin, thug an t-aontachas sin réimse leathan de stair náisiúnta, de chultúir agus de thraidisiúin dhlíthiúla chuig spás coiteann dlíthiúil an Aontais. I bhfianaise mhéid an chomhtháthaithe a bhí bainte amach ag an Aontas Eorpach faoi 2004, ar thaobh amháin, agus an éagsúlacht a léirigh na deich mBallstát nua, ar an taobh eile, ní féidir an iomarca béime a chur ar thábhacht na tréimhse sin. Is cóir a rá gur tráth bunreachtúil a bhí i méadú 2004 ann féin – athrú paraidíme – inar tháinig Oirthear agus Iarthar na hEorpa le chéile mar chomhthionscadal bunreachtúil. Leathnaigh an tAontas Eorpach a chuid luachanna agus a phrionsabail chuig codanna den Eoraip a bhfuil stair an-chasta acu. Cé gur tháinig na 10 mBallstát nua isteach san Aontas le diongbháilteacht agus dóchas ar leith don tsaoirse, don cheartas agus don rathúnas, dhéanfaí tástáil ar an diongbháilteacht sin le dúshláin mhóra.
