Cookies

Introduction

To make this site run properly, we sometimes place small data files, called cookies, on your device.

You have the option to delete or block cookies if desired; however, this may limit the performance of certain site features. Importantly, any information gathered through these cookies is used solely to optimise site function and user experience and is controlled entirely by the Curia website.

What are cookies?

A cookie is a small text file that a website saves on your computer or mobile device when you visit the site. It enables the website to remember your actions and preferences (such as login, language, font size and other display preferences) over a period of time. This means that you don’t have to keep re-entering the every time you return to the site or browse from one page to another.

Other cookies, from third parties, can also be used to track you when you navigate to other sites that also use these third parties’ services.

How to manage your cookies

You can control and/or delete cookies as you wish. You can find more detail on aboutcookies.org, which also provides information on how to do this on many of the more commonly-used browsers.

You can delete cookies that are already on your computer.

If you do delete cookies, however, you may have to adjust some preferences next time you visit a site, and be asked again for your consent to the use of cookies.

Main website (curia.europa.eu)

A number of pages on the Curia website use cookies. These remember

  • technical settings and your display preferences, such as language, contrast colour settings or font size (JSESSIONID and JSESSIONIDCORS)
  • if you have agreed (or not) to our use of cookies on this site (cck1)

These cookies are technically necessary.

If you delete these cookies they will be set again the next time you visit this site or navigate to a new page on the site.

Deleting the cck1 cookie will cause the cookie banner to appear and you will be asked again for your consent.

The cookie-related information is not used to identify you personally.

Search (infocuria.curia.europa.eu)

The Search function and case-law database requires no further additional cookies to function beyond those common to the whole website.

E-Curia

The e-Curia application uses a session cookie from Cloudflare to enhance the security and performance of the application by identifying and managing traffic from different users behind a shared IP address.

The cookie helps Cloudflare distinguish between legitimate users and potential malicious bots or attackers, allowing for appropriate security measures.

Analytics

The Court of Justice uses the open-source analytics platform “Matomo” to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of its website.

Collecting such data allows us to monitor how our site is used and make improvements to help users find the information they need.

Matomo enables the protection of end-user personal data. Key features include IP address de-identification and an opt-out mechanism, allowing users to choose not to have their browsing tracked for analytics.

What data is collected?

The data collected consist of an identifier, the information such as

  • the date and time of the consultation of the webpages
  • the pages, links and files consulted
  • the referrer that brought you to the website
  • technical data of your computer and browser

No data allowing for direct identification of individuals is collected.

The information collected is kept for a period of 13 months. Afterwards, only aggregated information is kept.

In accordance with the applicable rules with regard to the protection of personal data, you have the right to request access to your data and, where applicable, rectification, erasure or restriction of processing.
