The Court of Justice of the European Union provides an online educational programme for secondary school students. The programme involves a virtual event, which explains the role of the EU judiciary and shows how the Court’s rulings impact the daily lives of EU citizens. It focuses on raising young people’s awareness of active participation in European democracy and the issues involved. It also aims to improve their understanding of their rights as EU citizens.

Who can take part?

This programme is designed for secondary school students aged 15 to 18.

Each event must be arranged by an “organiser”, i.e. a teacher or class leader.

What does the programme involve?

The programme for each event can be customised. The Court’s Visits Service will help you do this. Organisers can tailor their programme by choosing different interactive elements, including

  • a meeting with a senior official from the Court of Justice or the General Court who shares the same nationality as the group. In some circumstances, and depending on availability, a Judge or Advocate General may give the presentation (45 minutes)
  • a presentation of a case from the Court of Justice or General Court, linked to the group’s country of origin or interest (45 minutes)
  • a presentation on the different professions at the Court (30 minutes)
  • a presentation on multilingualism at the Court (30 minutes)

Each programme element will end with a Q&A session.

Other important information

Group size

Each group must have at least 20 participants.

For any groups of over 60 participants, the Q&A session will be adapted and arranged in collaboration with the Visits Service.

Dates

Organisers can suggest three possible dates for the meeting that must not be during judicial holidays. We will try to organise the event on one of these dates.

Duration

We recommend that each programme should last a maximum of two hours.

Language

The organiser can choose which of the 24 official EU languages they wish to use.

Guidance

A moderator who speaks the group’s language will guide the programme.

Educational support

Before the event, we will provide the organisers with a series of documents and links to help teachers to prepare students in class.

Technical test

Before the event, we will arrange a date with the organisers to test the connection (this will take about 10 minutes). The Court will use its Webex platform for the event, but visitors do not need to download this application.

How do we sign up?

Teachers or class leaders who are interested in setting up a virtual event must register in advance. Several classes from the same school can join the same event.
