Proofreader/language editor
In order to guarantee the linguistic quality and consistency of documents produced by the Court, proofreaders/language editors are responsible for typographical correction and linguistic verification of certain documents translated by lawyer-linguists and freelance translators. For the most part, these are documents intended to be published or widely distributed.
The texts concerned (mainly judgments, orders, Opinions of the Advocates General and résumés of decisions) must be carefully checked so that they are consistent in all respects with the rules governing the use of the language and the practices defined within the linguistic units, the Directorate-General for Multilingualism (DGM) and the Court as a whole. In that respect, proofreaders/language editors contribute to the development of internal and inter-institutional drafting rules.
However, their work goes beyond this remit, and includes giving advice on drafting, checking the completeness of documents and monitoring linguistic developments at the national level.
They also contribute to the training of new colleagues, whether they are proofreaders/language editors or lawyer-linguists.
Like all staff, proofreaders/language editors increasingly use IT tools as part of their work.
