Visit by the European Court of Human Rights

On 24 November, a delegation from the European Court of Human Rights visited the Court of Justice of the European Union.

This visit was in the context of the regular contact between the Courts, on both a judicial and an administrative level.

The delegation of 26 judges, led by Mattias Guyomar, President of the European Court of Human Rights, was welcomed by Koen Lenaerts, President of the Court of Justice of the European Union.

Throughout the day, the judges of both Courts participated in a number of discussions on issues of common concern, including

  • the best interest of the child in cross-border child abduction cases
  • freedom of expression in the digital age
  • legal and physical obstacles to accessing asylum procedures

Before the discussion got under way, the two Presidents sat down in our studio and reflected on the role of the two Courts, the relationship between the European Convention on Human Rights and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and on the challenges facing our democracies today.
