Visit by the Romanian Constitutional Court
On 20 and 21 April 2026, a delegation from the Romanian Constitutional Court, led by its President Elena-Simina Tănăsescu, visited the Court of Justice of the European Union. They were welcomed by Koen Lenaerts, President of the Court of Justice, together with the institution’s Members from Romania: Octavia Spineanu-Matei, President of Chamber at the Court of Justice; Ion Gâlea, President of Chamber at the General Court; and Mirela Stancu, Judge at the General Court.
The visit took place in the context of the close and longstanding relations that the Court maintains with national courts of the Member States and provided an opportunity to further strengthen judicial dialogue.
On Monday 20 April, the members of the delegation and of the EU courts took part in a number of working sessions covering
- the rule of law, judicial independence and democracy
- recent case-law developments on the protection of personal data
- the preliminary ruling procedure as an instrument of cooperation
These sessions provided an opportunity for participants to engage in discussions, exchange views and share their respective experiences on matters of common interest.
On Tuesday 21 April, the participants attended the hearing of the Grand Chamber of the Court of Justice in case C-524/24 Italy v Austria. They also received presentations on the Court’s communication policy and its approach to multilingualism, providing further insight into the Court’s functioning and activities.
