Art at the Court
European identity grows through the sharing and mixing of different national cultures. At the Court, where the different legal traditions from across Europe interact every day, art is valued as an important part of this shared European culture.
With support from the Member States, the Court maintains a collection of artworks reflecting Europe’s multicultural heritage. These works showcase the unique traditions of each Member State while also helping to express a common European spirit.
The artworks, which have been donated, loaned or placed on deposit, vary in style and age. They often represent themes like Europe, justice, harmony, cooperation and peace.
The collection began with an artwork loaned by France in 1969 to decorate the Court’s first courtroom. This was followed by works commissioned by Luxembourg – from artists representing the six founding EU Member States – to decorate the Palais, which was inaugurated in 1973. Since then, more works have been added. The collection has evolved alongside the development of European integration and the history of the Court itself.
The Court’s striking architecture provides an ideal setting for displaying these works of art, which come from all over Europe. For both staff and visitors of the Court, the chance to experience the diversity of these pieces is a powerful reminder of the harmonious coexistence of the various cultures of the Member States.
