          PROFESSOR, UNIVERSITY OF SILESIA, KATOWICE

Thank you very much for the invitation. It is a great honour to partici-

pate in this important event and to listen to all distinguished speakers.

I will try to look at the consequences of the judgment in the case of

          Van

          Gend en Loos

from the perspective of a lawyer from a country that inherited

the entire doctrine of direct effect and supremacy. At the time we joined the

Union, the basic principles of the application of Community Law had been

already established. One must remember of course that even though these

principles stem in the first place from the judgement in the case of

          Van Gend

          en Loos

, they were fully shaped in the subsequent case-law of the Court.

In my brief intervention I would like to underline three aspects:

—— uniform application of the EU law

          —— terminology

—— shadows of the judgment in the case of

          Van Gend en Loos

          (as suggested

in the paper of Professor Weiler)
